As one of the more established churches in the downtown of the City of Gastonia, St. Marks is always pressed for space. As their congregation continues to grow their ministry needs were not being met by their existing facilities and due to their tight site they we unsure how to meet their needs. After retaining the church architects at Stewart Cooper Newell Architects, we led their committee through a detailed planning process and analyzed their facilities for innovative ways to create more space. The solution was to add a second floor to their existing education building and then connect the sanctuary and education building by enclosing the small space between the two structures. To blend the old and new architecture, we carefully reworked the exterior of the classroom building to include arches, new windows, and brick work so that the church looked inviting and comforting to the public.
